Viewers of the popular Zain Africa Challenge, a television (TV) show sponsored by Zain Mobile were last week rewarded with gift items worth thousands of naira by the GSM giant.
Speaking during the Media viewing of the finals of the Challenge and prize giving ceremony at the Zain Nigeriaâ€™s headquarters, Ikoyi, Lagos, the Head, Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, Zain, Mr Chinda Manjo said Zain African Challenge was an educational program geared toward the development and upliftment of education system in Africa. He said the event which started late last year with 16 universities across Africa saw Egerton University of Kenya emerged winner.
Mr. Manjo stated that the program was not meant for students who participated directly in the competition as there was platform provided for viewers at home to take part in the competition and win prizes. According to him, â€œ home viewers game is where Zain give the viewers opportunity to participate and win prizes during the African Challenge.
There is also a fan-facebook play where winners emerge every weekâ€, he revealed adding that it was through such platforms that the winners who just received their prizes emerged from.
Also speaking, the Head, Corporate Communications, Zain, Mr Emeka Oparah said Zain was committed to the development of education in Nigeria. According to him, the GSM network provider has observed the huge gap created in the countryâ€™s education sector and was doing everything withing its reach to fill it.
Mr Oparah said Zain is given the future leaders opportunities to interact with their counterparts all over the world through academic exercises, traveling, among others.
The PR professional who described the Zain Africa Challenge as a serious and annual event said it received overwhelming acceptance from the public. â€œ Reactions from the public, parents, students, our clients, and the media show the program is a laudable initiativeâ€.
Meanwhile, the winners were full of praises to Zain for the wonderful opportunity given to them to participate and win prizes in the competition. Each of the winners went home with internet- enabled Nokia phone, Zain bag, among other items. The winners included: Mr Phina Emorde, Bukola Aderetoh, Fatima Anyekema, Samuel Oseni, Chinedu Samuel Lemchukwu, and Mr. Birimote Iyabi. They were unanimous in saying that they did not play to win but for playing sake.
Mr. Birimote Iyabi, a soldier and staff of Nigerian Army School of Finance and Administration, Apapa, Lagos said he started watching the program last year when it started. â€œ I didnâ€™t believe that I will win. I just gave it a try.â€ He commended Zain for the good work and urged them to keep it up.
Another winner, Ms Bukola Aderentoh described the program as educative. She said she did not believe in texting but according to her, the question was so cheap that she decided to waste her one hundred naira which was the cost for each text. â€œ I was surprised when I was called to come and pick my prize. I thought it was a joke but I now know that Zain is realâ€, she opined.
