The Return of Robesonites in October…

The UNN Robesonites, the Alumni association of UNN graduates of dramatic arts, is planning a Home Coming in October this year at the department of theatre and film studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

The event is aimed at re-uniting all the UNN graduates of dramatic/theatre arts from 1987 to date; giving back to the department in terms of donation of equipment and materials, institution of academic awards for students, as well as offering other forms of support to the department. The name “Robesonites” is adopted from the “Paul Robeson Drama Building” which has housed the dramatic arts department from its inception.

According to the president of The UNN Robesonites, Mr. Ike Ezugwu, the event will help the members of the association to contribute their quota to the development of the department, the arts and culture and the University of Nigeria as a global learning center.

Mr. Ezugwu who is also the pioneer president of the Students Association- ADAS (1987 class) is also the coordinator of the home coming project. Mr. Ezugwu believes that the initiative will also go a long way in supporting the developmental programmes of the present head of Department, theatre and film studies, Dr. Uchenna Nwozuzu and the present Vice chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Prof. Batho Okolo.

Mr. Ezugwu describes his recent visit to his alma mater as an “eye-opener”. He says, “the department has witnessed tremendous positives changes in terms of course content, management, provision of infrastructure, equipment and teaching/learning aids. The department which before now, was purely focused on dramatic arts is now a full-fledged department of theatre and film studies, well equipped with ultra modern cameras, computers, editing suites, lighting and sound equipment. The department now boasts of two well equipped theaters and a theater –in- the round!”

In spite of these giant strides taken by the university administration and the department’s leadership, the Robesonites believe that there are still challenges that need urgent attention. These include a functional production vehicle for movement of cast and crew to locations, a departmental bus, a power generating set among others. These are the areas the association wants to come in. They also want to institute academic awards to further motivate the students and reward excellence in the various areas of theater and film studies.

The proposed awards shall be named after renowned scholars and lecturers in the department who contributed immensely to the success of the department. These include Prof. Emeka Nwabueze, Mr. Domba Asomba, Mr. Eni Jones Umuko, Prof. Ossie Enekwe(late), Prof. Jaz Amankulor(late) and Prof. Esiaba Irobi(late)..
