AKURE—Ex-wife of Deji of Akureland, Olori Bolanle Adepoju who was battered last Sunday on the orders of the traditional ruler has petitioned Governor Olusegun Mimiko, describing the action of the Oba as criminal in nature and should be punished under the Criminal Code.

The petition written by the solicitors to the Olori, Olatunbosun Aganun was titled: “Public attack on Olori Bolanle Adepoju Adesina by Oba Oludare Adepoju Adesina: A royal show of shame and a demand for justice.”

The petition stated that, “in a Gestapo-like manner, the Deji with the aid of his cohorts barged into our client’s apartment without her consent. He dragged her from upstairs to the busy Hospital road and beat her blue-black in the public glare.

“Save for divine intervention and the response of passers-by who held the Kabiyesi as he was having a field day on the street like Hulk Hogan on a wrestling ring it would had been a story of sorrow, pain and wailing in the household of the mother of two boys if the Kabiyesi had succeeded with his nefarious, devilish and clandestine plan to pour acid on the entire body of our client.

“We wish to state with great sense of responsibility that our client is presently receiving treatment for chemical burns and other injuries sustained during the melee at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo after the first aid she got at the State Specialist Hospital, Akure.

“We equally want to state categorically and unequivocally with great emphasis that the public opprobrium has subjected our client to great psychological trauma, pains and financial loss.
“From the foregoing, we most humbly submit in strong and clear terms that the paramount ruler’s acts are contrary to royal norms, values and tradition. We demand justice on behalf of our client as the matter is beyond a domestic affair. We wish you use your good office to instruct the police to order a full scale investigation into the matter without fear or favour.”

Meanwhile, the meeting to decide the fate of the Oba by the Kingmakers entered the second day yesterday as the Lisa of Akureland, High Chief Folorunso Davies said consultations with highly placed personalities who are indigenes of the town were on.

Davies told newsmen that those who were informed of the disgraceful action of the Oba include the state government, the leader of the Afenifere who hails from the town, Chief Reuben Fasoranti and a former Secretary to the State Government, Chief Wunmi Adegbonmire.

He said a decisive action would be taken after all stakeholders have been carried along in their decision.

….As women protest battering of monarch’s wife

Also yesterday, women in Ondo State  staged a protest calling on the traditional rulers in the country to call the embattled Deji of Akureland, Oba Oludare Adepoju to order for battering his ex-wife, Olori Bolanle Adepoju, describing his action as an act of indiscipline.

Meanwhile, two women groups, the National Council of Women Society of Nigeria, Ondo State Chapter, and Women Arise, have called on Nigerians to rise up and condemn the inhuman treatment meted on Olori Bolanle Adepoju by Deji of Akureland, Oba Oludare Adepoju.

President of the National Council of Women Society of Nigeria, Ondo State Chapter, Princess Iyabo Akinnagbe who led the protesting women to the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Bukola Tenabe vowed to take the fight against the injustice to the National Body of the Council.

The placard carrying women had inscriptions such as “Council of Obas please bail all women out of violence”, “Women maltreatment should be stopped”, “We say no to zero tolerance against women, Stop molestation of women”, “No to inhuman attitude of women.”

Speaking with newsmen after meeting with the Commissioner, the President of NCWS who rained unprinted words on the Oba said they would mobilize Nigerians against the Oba if nothing is done by those concerned.

Describing his action as an act of indiscipline on the part of a first class Oba in the state, the women said “women are not slaves that should be maltreated by the men and we are going to fight this beastly action with the last drop of blood in our veins.

Women Arise on its part called on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo to order the arrest of the Deji of Akure, the reigning Queen, Olori Remi Abiola and all the thugs who assaulted the traditional ruler’s ex-wife last Sunday and arraign them before a competent court of law.

It also called on the Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko to ensure that the monarch, who it alleged was saved from deposition last year for his persistent desecration of the Deji stool, is not shielded from prosecution.
