Senate angry with South East road contractors

THE Senate has expressed disappointment  over the snail pace of work by contractors awarded jobs by Federal government for road reconstructions in the South East zone.

The roads in question are; the Enugu-Onitsha dual carriage road, the Enugu-Port Harcourt dual carriage way; the Abakaliki-Afikpo road; the Onitsha Owerri road; Nkalagu-Nsukka road; 9th mile-Markuridi road; amongst  others.

Senate committee chairman on works, Senator Ucha who made the senate position known to Saturday Vanguard however said that the only exemption amongst the contractors is the MIFE Nigeria Limited which is  handling the construction of Nkalagu-Nsukka road which he said  is sincere and has been doing a good job  as indicated by the communities located along the road.

He also gave a pass mark to EECE construction company which is handling part of the Afikpo-Abakaliki road, saying that the contractor’s job speaks well of the company.

But the Senate committee chairman on works is fuming  at Bulletin Construction Company handling part of the Abakaliki-Afikpo  road.

Senator stated that the contractor is not serious with the job, recalling that the contractor is doing the same slow pace of work along Abuja-Lokoja road, threatening that if the construction company doers not show appreciable progress on the Abakaliki-Afikpo road, the contract may be revoked and the contractor made to account for the money so far collected.

“In fact I have been discussing with the Federal Ministry of Works people on the possibility of retrieving some roads from the non-performing contractors and give it to those that are performing and I can tell that we are compiling their dossier.  Very soon the Senate works committee will address a press conference to that effect,” Ucha told Vanguard correspondent.

Other contractors indicated by the senate as non performing contractors include the ones handling the Enugu-Onitsha road as well as the Enugu-Port Harcourt road, among others. It would be recalled that both the Forum of South East governors as well as the speakers of the southeast states had condemned the slow pace of work by the contractors and urged the federal government to expedite action on the non performing contractors.
