ABUJA—It was a narrow escape for Senator Gbemisola Saraki yesterday when four armed men believed to be hired assassins stormed her Maitama District residence at about 1. a.m yesterday, barely hours after she left for the United States.

Senator Saraki, younger sister to Governor Bukola Saraki was said to be nursing Kwara State governorship ambition in 2011 but it could not be confirmed whether the killers invasion of her residence had any political undertone.

In a swift reaction, Senate spokesman, Senator Ayogu Eze called on the Inspector General of Police IGP, Mr Ogbonaya Onovo to fish out the unknown gunmen describing the development as unfortunate

The suspected assassins  spent over one hour ransacking every nook and cranny of the house demanding for the head of the senator.

The invaders were said to have gathered the security aides and other domestic staff of the senator, dispossessed them of their handsets, disconnected the intercomm in the compound and locked them up in a boy’s quarters before combing every corner in search of their target. After a fruitless search, they however left with only the GSM phones seized from the domestic staff after making a call to somebody on the phone that the target was not at home.

A source close to the Senator said she had a premonition of the attack about a week ago but never knew she was going to be the target. It was learnt that a GSM text message to her phone had warned her that assassins had been paid to kill her father, Dr Olusola Saraki. The warning may have turned out as a diversionary tactic while she was indeed the target of their plot.
