Enugu—Prices of staples have continued to rise in Enugu and environs as the 2010 planting season comes to an end, forcing many residents to seek alternative means of survival.
A survey conducted, yesterday, showed that prices of fresh tomatoes, yams, cocoa yams, garri, pepper, onions, fish and okro had gone beyond the reach of the poor.
Chinenye Ezeani, a tomato and pepper dealer at Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, said it was a normal development for prices of perishable items like tomatoes and pepper to increase during the rainy season.
“This year is exceptional because since the past two months, a basket of tomatoes that usually cost between N3,000 and N4,000 now sells for between N10,000 and N12,000 depending on the specie,’’ she said.
She noted that the situation was adversely affecting sellers more than buyers because the number of baskets she sold daily had reduced.
