Counsel’s absence stalls kidnap negotiator’s trial

Uyo—The trial of a 23-year-old suspected kidnap negotiator, Samuel Nkono, at the Chief Magistrate’s Court II in Uyo, could not hold,  due to the absence of the defence counsel.

The counsel, Mr Mba Ukwensi, wrote to say he had another case at the Supreme Court on the same date.
The accused is standing trial on a two-count charge of fraud and stealing N200,000.

Nkono is accused of defrauding the Chairman of Eket Local Government Area, Mr Emmanuel Udoh, of N200,000 under pretence to facilitate the release of Gowon Udoh, the brother of the chairman, who was kidnapped on 3 January 2009.

The accused was said to have committed the offence on 5 January 2009 and the kidnapped brother of the chairman was released on January 9.

The Chief Magistrate, Martins Obot, adjourned the case to July 27.
