KANO — The Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, has identified safety consideration and security consciousness as factors responsible for incessant fire outbreak in major markets in Kano.
A position paper submitted by the Kano branch of the Society under the leadership of the branch chairman, Alhaji Rabiu Ali observed that absence of fire hydrant in the affected markets and water storage reservour impede fire fighting when ever the need arises.
Rabiu lamented non-compliance to building code in the markets during construction, stressing that most of the shops have no fire resistance that made it highly vulnerable and susceptible to fire outbreak.
“Although the shops were built to house highly combustible materials, they are constructed like any common building without consideration for using fire resistant materials,” Ali said.
The NSE noted that most fire incidents in Kano markets occurred at night and, therefore, advocated a dedicated power line to the markets to light up security bulb.
The Society of Engineers, while commiserating with the people of Kano over the recent fire incident at Kwari market, donated N100,000 to victims of the disaster.
Responding, Kano State Commissioner in charge Monitoring, Alhaji Garba Yusuf, commended the professional group for identifying with Kano at the moment of needs.
Yusuf, who also doubles as the chairman, Kanti Kwari Market fire, assured the engineers that government would study and implement their recommendations with view to addressing fire outbreak in Kano markets.
