Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, has indicated its intention to move this year’s Mobil Championships back to Lagos.

According to a top member of the federation, moving the national trials for the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the African Championships to Lagos became a matter of top consideration as the sponsors, Mobil Nigeria, was yet to release funds for the trails, even as time was running out.

This year’s edition was originally slated for the U.J Esuene Stadium Calabar, on the weekend of June 24-26.
“Under the present circumstance, we are considering returning the championships to Lagos. This is because we have not received funds from the sponsor.

“We do not want to wait till the last minute to book airline ticket for the athletes. Late bookings come at an extra cost.
“Last year we spent a lot of money to cover grounds,”said the AFN member.

He said coming back to Lagos will curtail expenses and make room for convenience.“Lagos is a convenient venue for us. This is because the athletes will fly into Lagos and come straight to the venue rather than fly again to Calabar, at an additional expense.”

He disclosed that last year, the sponsors released only N13m for the Mobil Championships held in Abuja. And according to him, the AFN spent an additional N8m.

“We are hoping to curtail too much spending, that is why we are considering Lagos. We wanted to take Mobil to other parts of the country but Calabar was receptive. But we are now constrained.”

Meanwhile, the final of the AFN golden leagues comes up next weekend at the Oghara Township Stadium. Ogho-oghene Egwero, Margaret Etim, Chinazom Amadi and Isiaku Mohammed are the athletes who are in contention for the N1m jackpot.
