Nigeriaâ€™s Member of the Executive Committee of the world football â€“governing body, FIFA, Dr. Amos Adamu said on Saturday that the African continent is already a winner as far as the 2010 FIFA World Cup is concerned, with a spectacular opening ceremony that has set the stage for a spectacular hosting.
â€œSouth Africa has shown that she can host a perfect championship, and that will be to the glory of the entire Africa. I am delighted, and we must reserve special commendation for the FIFA President, Mr. Sepp Blatter for having faith in Africa, for believing that the continent can do it, even when the odds were stacked against Africa.
â€œWe also must applaud the efforts of the President of Confederation of African Football, Alhaji Issa Hayatou in convincing FIFA that Africa can not only do it, but do it well, and even better than some other continents that have had the opportunityâ€.
He added: â€œEvery effort must be made to ensure that everything go as planned in the next 30 daysâ€
Adamu went to wish the Nigeria national football team, the Super Eagles good luck at the tournament, starting with their opening match against Argentina at Ellis Park on Saturday.Â
The 57 â€“year old respected administrator was the Sole Administrator of the then Nigeria Football Association when the Eagles earned their first â€“ever FIFA World Cup ticket back in 1993.
He was for more than a decade Director of Sports Development in the Nigeria Ministry of Sports, and was also chief organizer of the 8th All-Africa Games that Nigeria hosted in Abuja in 2003.
Adamu is also President of the West African Football Union and Member of the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football.
