OWERRI — The leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has released the list of its candidates for the local government elections scheduled to hold 7 August.
As at the time of going to press, only the primaries for Orlu Local Government Area remained largely unresolved, while serious efforts were on to resolve the looming impasse in the area.
Meanwhile, a meeting of party loyalists had been held in the multi-purpose hall, Government House, Owerri, where the names of the chairmanship and councillorship candidates were announced.
While addressing party faithful, Governor Ikedi Ohakim explained that part of the essence of the meeting was to find out if the candidates were acceptable to the people, and if any name had been substituted through the back door.
He reassured the citizenry that the local council polls would be transparent and he passionately appealed to political leaders to ensure transparency in everything they do in the course of the election.
Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Chief Goodluck Nanah Opiah, made it clear that the election would only hold in the 305 political wards created by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
“The election will not be conducted in the wards created by the State Independent Electoral Commission because previous leadership of the House did not back the ward creation with an enabling law,†Opiah said.
State PDP Chairman, Chief Marcellinus Nlemigbo, disclosed that the party concluded its primaries two weeks ago.
