KANO — Local government chairmen and public officials in Kano Ministry of Local Government have gone into hiding following the arrest of immediate past Commissioner for Local Government and four council bosses in the state by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday.
Among those arrested and taken to the anti-graft commission headquarters in Abuja included the ‘anointed’ Shekarau successor, Mallam Sagir Salihu Takai; Alhaji Salisu Maje Ahmed Gwangwazo, Municipal Council; Alhaji Abbas Sani Abbas, Gwale LGA; Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, Nasarawa LGA, and Amanalahi Ahmed Muhammad, Tarauni LGA.
Also arrested in Kano, Wednesday night, was the Permanent Secretary, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji AbdulMalik Yakubu, while several council bosses on the wanted list have gone underground. Activities at several council secretariat yesterday were grinded to a halt due to the absence of the principal officers.
Vanguard learnt that the action of the EFCC was predicated on a petition by a Kano-based Movement for Justice sequel to the report of the Kano House of Assembly that indicted some council bosses of “financial impropriety.”
The petition signed by Chairman and Secretary of the Movement, Alhaji Ali Adamu Muhammad and Alhaji Adamu Shehu Yau respectively noted that despite the damning report, there was no corresponding punishment either from the Assembly or the state Government to serve as deterrent.
