Ecobank has extended its Regional Card (ATM Card) services; enabling holders of the card withdraw cash within South Africa from any Nedbank ATM. The inclusion of South Africa in the usage of the Ecobank Regional Card was announced on Thursday by Ecobank Nigeria Managing Director, Mr. Jibril Aku in Lagos.
According to Mr. Aku the move is part of the Ecobank Nedbank Alliance initiative which has brought the two banks into a co_operative partnership. In his words â€œI am pleased to announce that the Ecobank regional Card will as of today enable holders to withdraw their money in South African Rands, from any of the 1,860 Nedbank ATMs throughout the country,â€
He said the cards are available to anyone with an Ecobank account, and will offer considerable advantage to Nigerians traveling to watch football in South Africa. They will be able to access South African Rands from any Nedbank ATM, and hence donâ€™t need to carry sacks of money when they are travelling..
He said though the extension was aimed at making it easy for people travelling to South Africa for the World cup, the use of the card is the country however continues after the soccer fiesta.
The Ecobank Regional Card is a multicurrency debit card that allows Ecobank account holders to access funds in their accounts in the local currency of the country where an Ecobank ATM or point of sale terminal is present.Â Aku said the use of the card in S.A is subject to the foreign exchange regulations of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the maximum limit of InterSwitch.
With the addition of South Africa, the number of ATMâ€™s from which cash can be accessed through the Ecobank Regional, Card within Africa has shot up to over 2,460.
