2011: Arewa raises fears over credible polls

By Emeka Mamah

KADUNA— The Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has said that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, may not be able to conduct the much-desired free and fair elections next year unless the appropriate authorities take immediate steps for the enactment of the proposed electoral reforms.

In a statement at the end of its National Working Committee meeting in Kaduna, yesterday, the group also affirmed that success of the elections would also depend on release of funds to INEC.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani, ACF noted that, “the new leadership of INEC requires more than goodwill or moral support to enable it deliver on the promise of credible elections

“The speedy confirmation of nominated INEC functionaries, quick enactment of the electoral reforms and untrammeled releases of the needed financial resources are also critical for the smooth conduct of credible elections in 2011.

“Such should, therefore, be in place without further delay, precisely because for the INEC leadership it is a race against time.

“The forum has also considered the generally positive endorsement of Professor Jega across all parts of the country and feels very grateful that President Goodluck Jonathan has the courage and wisdom to select a Nigerian whose credentials suggest he is the right man for the job.

“The forum also congratulates Prof. Jega and others on their important appointment which most Nigerians believe they are eminently qualified. We wish them well. They cannot afford to fail or disappoint the many who believe in them so passionately,” it added.
