ABUJA— Former National Independent Electoral Commission Chairman, Prof Maurice Iwu, has said the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua is a huge loss to the nation.
According to him, “his death has deprived the nation of a very decent, honest and patriotic leader who meant well for his people.
“President Yar’Adua was a man without can’t. He said what he meant and meant what he said. Though his sincerity was abused and distorted at some instances, he remained consistent through the years and did not find any sense in playing to the gallery.
“Although poor health had grossly limited his capacity in office as President, he did achieve a measure of success which gave a glimpse of his noble intentions for the nation.
“His amnesty policy in the troubled Niger Delta area restored peace in the region beyond what many could imagine. His full belief in the doctrine of rule of the law guided his actions in government and he did not for once take any action that undermined the Constitution or rule of the law.
“I testify that Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was a good person. I am privileged to have shared with him his plans and good intentions for Nigeria. He was a patience man and a good listener and his passion for good governance was very apparent.
“I extend my profound condolence to President Goodluck Jonathan, GCON, Mrs.Turai Yar’Adua, the entire Yar’Adua clan and the nation at large, on this loss of a leader. May the gentle soul of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua rest in deserved peace. Amen.”
