Yar’Adua was committed to rule of law, says Akhigbe

Former number two citizen in the last military dispensation, Admiral Mike Okhai Akhigbe has described former President Musa Yar’Adua as a leader who “was committed particularly to good governance and rule of law in this country.”

In a statement on Thursday in Lagos , Akhigbe said “I want to condole Her Excellency, Mrs Turai Yar’Adua, the Yar’Adua family and indeed all Nigerians on the sad loss of President Musa Yar’Adua.”

He noted that Yar’Adua’s “passionate and consummate commitment to the resolution of the Niger Delta problems was one legacy for which he will be fondly remembered.”

Akhigbe disclosed that the last meeting Yar’Adua held last year with the Aaron Team which he is the Chairman and Professor Wole Soyinka is an observer was fruitful. According to him, “the discussions during that meeting were with candor and commitment. I wish he had lived to accomplish all his plans and dreams not only for the Niger Delta but to all Nigerians.”

He recalled how Yar’Adua and another governor “sponsored and signed my nomination form to contest as President under PDP platform in 2007 before he himself was drafted in to the race.”

Akhigbe said his family will forever remember his goodness and prayed that he finds favour with the Lord in Heaven.
