The Rivers State government has resolved to make the forthcoming 17th National Sports Festival the best games ever since inception as the Executive Governor, Rotimi Amaechi has promised to make resources available to provide the best facilities for the Games.
Governor Amaechi also reiterated his personal commitment to make the 17th National Sports Festival a most memorable event to commemorate the countryâ€™s golden jubilee anniversary.
The Deputy Governor, Engineer Tele Ikuru that received visiting members of the Secretariat of the Main Organising Committee with secretaries of Sports Federations listed for the festival last Monday, informed the visiting team ofÂ the decision to build new structures for the Games which will include a stadium and a Games Village which will later be used as a University Hostel. This, he said,Â is premised on the desire of the state to have all facilities within the same arena for the Sports Festival, thereby reducing the problems of logistics.
Abba Yola, who led the secretariat of the Gamesâ€™ Main Organising Committee, commended theÂ host state for embarking on a laudable programme of providing new facilities for the Games, which coincides with Nigeriaâ€™s golden jubilee independence celebration.
After a visit to the proposed site for the new stadium complex, as well as inspection of other facilities earmarked for the Games, the State Governor was commended for his foresight in working towards providing new facilities.
The Governor was also applauded for initiating the process of undertaking massive renovation works on existing facilities as well in readiness for the 17th edition of the Sports Festival.
In his remarks, the leader of the delegation, Abba Yola informed the Governor that the team was in the State to interact with the Local Organising Committee, inspect facilities proposed for the Games and also assess the level of preparedness of the host for the festival tentatively scheduled for November, 2010.
He added that the success of the event depended largely on the close collaboration between the Main Organising Committee and the Local Organising Committee working as a team in all aspects of planning, monitoring and implementation of the games delivery.
Responding, Engineer Ikuru assured members of the team of the state governmentâ€™s resolve to make resources available to provide the best facilities for the games.
