UYO—The Police in Akwa  Ibom State have arrested a gang of kidnappers who abducted an 18-month-old baby at Nkwa Ibiono village, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, after they rescued the baby in a bush.

The police also smashed several robbery syndicates who have been terrorizing the state and recovered ammunitions, live cartridges, handsets and some huge sums of money stolen during armed robbery raids in the area.

Addressing newsmen in his office, the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Walter Rugbere, said men of the command in rapid response to a distress call had  dislodged a gang of armed robbers who stormed a hotel in Ikot Ekpene, where two of the robbers, names unknown, were shot dead during a gun battle with the police.

The police, according to the Commissioner, had earlier rescued a 13-year-old girl residing at Atan road, who was kidnapped by a gang of armed men using a bicycle, with one of the kidnappers dressed in a military  camouflage uniform.

He added that one Pastor Victor Sunday Ekpo, who was arrested by ‘B’ops patrol team along Owot Uta in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, was found with two locally made pistols and a laptop.

Rugbere, who vowed to eliminate crime in the state, said he was mounting a three days workshop to sensitize the general public on the need to always report suspected moves and persons to the police.
