Police parade traditional ruler, wife for alleged kidnapping

ENUGU — A prominent traditional ruler in Enugu State, Igwe Cornelius Nomeh of Oruku in Nkanu East Local Government Council, was paraded yesterday by the police for alleged kidnapping.

The Igwe was paraded alongside his accomplices,  including his wife, Ngozi; his son, John, a National Youths Service Corps, NYSC, member serving in Kwara State; Chukwunonso Anigbogu and a technician, Friday Ezeh.

They were arrested by the police in connection with the kidnap of a 19-year-old  third year medical student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu Campus, Miss Ifeoma Azubuike.

They were alleged to have kidnapped Ifeoma from New Haven area of Enugu, about 10 days ago and were negotiating  a ransom of N100 million when police, acting on a tip-off, swooped on them and rescued the victim. No ransom was paid.

Police said the student was rescued in one of the rooms in the Igwe’s palace. The room was said to have been the one used by his son, John, a first year Psychology student of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Agbani.

According to Enugu State Police Commissioner, Mr. Mohammed  Zarewa, Igwe Nomeh was arrested Thursday night.
