Jos — The Chidren’s Day celebration commemorated worldwide every May 27 has been cancelled in Jos North and Jos South local government areas of Plateau State for security reasons.
This, Vanguard learnt, may not be unconnected with the renewed outbreak of violence in the capital last Sunday which resulted in the death of two people.
A circular sent to schools in the two local government areas by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development signed by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Cecilia Nimfar, announced the cancellation of the celebration.
It advised parents to keep their wards at home during the celebration in view of the prevailing situation in the state. However, other local government areas are exempted from the cancellation.
Many schools had been having march-past rehearsals in preparation for the occasion.
It was gathered that the decision to cancel the celebration in the two local governments was based on security advice.
