PDP power blocs shop for Ogbulafor’s successor

By  Ben Agande, Abuja
There are indications  that a serious search is underway for a successor to the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Vincent Ogbulafor, with power blocs in the party locked in a game of wits.

While one of the power blocs working for General Ibrahim Babangida is believed to be pushing for the candidacy of the former president of the Senate, Senator Ken Nnamani, as national chairman of the party, the other group loyal to former President Olusegun Obasanjo/Acting President Goodluck Jonathan is said to be pushing for the emergence of Chief Andy Uba, former aide of Obasanjo.
Sunday Vanguard gathered that the suspension of Nnamani, alongside other prominent members of the Reform Forum in the PDP, was a preemptive move to checkmate the activities of the Babangida group which is believed to be represented by the Reform Forum.

A source knowledgeable in the intrigues in the party said state governors are determined to ensure that the stranglehold they have on the party is not relaxed by allowing another candidate other than their choice to occupy the chairmanship seat. “The governors are determined to ensure that not even the presidency determines who emerges the chairman of the party. They do not want a repeat of the Obasanjo era when the national chairman of the PDP was handpicked by the president.

This is at the root of the entire recent crisis in the party”, the source said.

It was further learnt that Obasanjo is pushing for Uba to emerge the chairman of the party and he is alleged to have sold the idea to Jonathan.

According to one aide of the acting president who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak on the matter, Jonathan has not agreed to back Uba but is determined to ensure
that Ogbulafor leaves office because of allegations of corruption against him.

Our source pointed out that with the return of the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to the PDP, Obasanjo will use that to canvass that Andy Uba is readmitted into the party too.

Andy Uba had left the PDP to join the Labour Party where he contested for the Anambra governorship election in February this year.
Sunday Vanguard gathered that the suspension of Senator Ken Nnamani and others would be lifted after they might have withdrawn the case they instituted in court against the party.
