PDP CHAIR: Hurdle for Anyim

By Hugo Odiogor
Pro-Reform Group battling to enthrone a new  leadership in Peoples Democratic Party is poised to thwart the emergence of Chief Anyim Pius Anyim as the chairman of the embattled party.

Sources close to the group told Vanguard that Chief Anyim who lost out to Prince Vincent Ogbulafor in 2007, was the arrowhead of the Concerned Nigerians who went to the National Assembly on January 27, 2010 to campaign against the empowerment of Dr. Jonathan as the Acting President for Late Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua who created a power vacuum by not handing power to the then Vice President.

The Concerned Nigerian Group led by Chief Anyim had gone to the chambers of both the Senate and House of Representatives to argue that the non transmission of letter to the then Vice President should not be politicized because the constitution had made adequate provisions for the Vice President to act for the ailing President who was on medical vacation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The group was opposed to invoking sections 143 and 144 of the constitution but rather insisted that only the Federal Executive Council (FEC) should determine the health status of the late President who was completely incapacitated t o perform his function.

A source within the Pro-Reform Group said: “members of the Concerned Nigerian Group took sides with the Turai Cabal and tried to speak with both sides of their mouth as we saw in the nilly willy judgements of Justice Abutu.

We want moral men in positions of leadership, not political opportunists”.

The Concerned Nigeria Group was made up of prominent politicians, retired generals, Labour leaders who wanted Dr. Jonathan to maintain the pre-February 9, 2010, position.  Sources said, “we took account of the politics played by the Anyim group and the least we can do is to hand over the chair of PDP to a certain man who shared the same philosophy with the former chairman, these are political survivalists”

But defending the position taken by  the Concerned Nigerian Group a notable member of the Pro-Yar’Adua camp said “ We should allow whatever politics that transpired during the Yar’Adua era to fade away. Now Dr. Jonathan is the president and that is all that matters.”.

Anyim was also said  not be in the good books of Chief Olusegun Obansanjo who used the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate him when he was the President of the Senate.

Obasanjo worked against Anyim who was a major force in the run up to the campaign that threw up Prince Vincent Ogbulafor in 2007.

“The two men are at opposite end and cannot work together” said the source.
