Nigeria, UN Agency to commence census

Nigeria and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) are scheduled to commence tomorrow a census of all Liberian refugees resident in the country to assess their needs, an official statement said Friday. Tens of thousands of Liberians who fled bloody civil warfare in their country poured into Nigeria about 20 years ago.

The exercise, is to know the exact number of the Liberians in Nigeria, “ascertain their profile for better identification of their needs and the application of the most suitable durable solutions,” it said.

The six-day exercise, the last to be jointly carried out by the Nigerian government and the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), will take place in the commision’s office in Lagos and a former camp set up for Liberian refugees at Oru in Ogun State.
