A Lagos-based Specialist Hospital, St IVES, has successfully delivered a 57-year-old woman, Mrs Adeyemi Taiwo, of a baby girl. This was achieved through the Invitro Fertilization, IVF, Unit of the hospital.
According to the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Tunde Okewale, the delivery is the oldest case he has handled since he began the fertility unit of the hospital.
“The woman is arguably the oldest IVF mother in Nigeria, interestingly too, the baby weighed 2.00kg when it was delivered at 7.45 a.m on 11May 2010 after 35 weeks of gestation,†Okewale said.
The baby was delivered through caesarean surgery after comprehensive IVF treatment at the hospital by a team of five doctors which comprised obstetrician and gynecologist, embryologist and neonatologists.
The baby and the mother are well and in very stable condition.
Over the years, St IVES Specialist Hospital has brought relieve to so many distraught families because of their inability to have a child they could call their own through the IVF and Infertility Unit. Women who have lost hope of having babies are now proud mothers through the assistance of the cost effective Invitro – fertilization method.
