ABUJA—MINISTER of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Senator Bala Mohammed yesterday warned all the six area council chairmen  that he will not hesitate to drag them before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and other anti-graft agencies for further prosecution if they steal government’s fund.

The minister also yesterday earmarked over N300 million in the 2010 statutory budget for the commencement of the initial work on the proposed FCT Area Councils’ Staff Training Institute, just as it would help  in capacity building for both political functionaries and career staff of the area councils.

Speaking yesterday while swearing-in the newly elected Area Council Chairmen, Senator Mohammed noted that the administration was not in any way prepared to compromise accountability and transparency in the area councils.

He stressed that he would ensure he monitors the activities of all the chairmen to ascertain the level of performance at the grassroots, adding that this would enable him assess if true governance and fiscal responsibility were adhered to.

According to him, “The FCT Administration cannot afford the doctrine of business as usual or even emulate the negative tendencies associated with local governments across the Federation.”
