Anambra to review vigilante membership

By Vincent Ujumadu

AWKA — MEMBERSHIPS of the 529 vigilante groups operating in the 177 autonomous communities in Anambra State are to be reviewed with a view to streamlining their operations.

The new Co-ordinator of the Anambra Vigilante Services, AVS, Mr. Kenneth Okonkwo, told newsmen in Awka, yesterday, the review became necessary because all manners of people, including the bad eggs in the society, have forced themselves into the AVS.

As part of the reforms, most of the operators of the AVS in the various communities have been coming to the state headquarters of the service for re-registration.

According to him, some of the people parading themselves as members of the vigilante service have questionable characters and it would amount to a disservice to the state to allow such a situation to remain unchecked.

“We are going to do a proper background check on all the vigilante groups in the state to enable us know who constitutes the membership, what they are doing at present and where they come from,” he said.
