UBTH’s Chief Medical Director abducted

By Simon Ebegbulem

BENIN—Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, Professor Michael Ibadin, was yesterday abducted as suspected kidnappers when he drove out of his residence behind the S&T Barracks, Ugbowo, to his office, and the abductors are asking for a N150 million ransom to effect his release.

The armed men, who abducted him were said to have laid siege to his area and immediately swung into action when Professor Ibadin left his compound in an Audi 80 car and an SUV van.

It was learnt that the three armed men accosted him, disarmed UBTH security men attached to him and left with the captive in their car, just as they abandoned his SUV van.

Vanguard learnt that the suspected abductors escaped through Ovia River, behind Ogida Police Barracks in Benin City.

When Vanguard visited the hospital, staff of the hospital were seen discussing the incident in groups, though patients were being attended to by doctors and nurses.

Though none of the management staff of the hospital agreed to comment on the issue, a senior official of the hospital who craved anonymity told journalists that “you people can see that I am the only person in the office now. All the management staff have gone to formally report the incident to the Commissioner of Police. This is a very trying time for us here.”

At the State Police Command, officials of the hospital met with top police officers, but the police, however, declined to comment on the matter in order not to put the life of the CMD in danger.

They also urged the state government and relevant agencies to ensure the quick release of the CMD.
