After losing in the round of sixteen last year, Oluwaleyimu Street , Ikeja is this time around targeting a spot among the top three in this year’s MTN/ Lagos Street Soccer Championship. Speaking at the Agindingbi Primary School play ground after qualifying for the next round of Season 3 of the championship last weekend, coach of the enterprising Oluwaleyimu street, Femi Omiunu declared emphatically that nothing will stop his side from picking one of the top three tickets.
The former international who was calm throughout the four Group-D matches his team played, stated that the players are in high spirit to do the street and their sponsor, Oyindamola Adegoke, Supervisor for Works in Ikeja Local Government proud.
The soft spoken coach thanked the sponsor of the Street Soccer Champions, MTN Nigeria and the Lagos State Government for providing an avenue for youths to display their God-given football skills. Though his team topped the group with eight points from two wins and two draws, Omiunu said he is not satisfied with the performance of his boys. According to the former Vasco Dagama football club of Eungu player, the Oluwaleyimu boys can play better than what they played, hoping to continue to ginger them on.
“We felt okay topping our group but I must confess that my boys did not give their hundred percent performances because I would have been more thrilled if we had won all our matches to send a clear warning signal to other title contenders that we meant business, The MTN/ Lagos Street Soccer Champion is one tournament that have raised the bar of football competitions in Nigeria because players now know if they do well they have a life time opportunity of going on a playing tour, that can open road of being scouted by foreign clubs so I want to thank the sponsor for sponsoring the tournament and the Lagos State Government under the leadership of Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola and its Sports Ministry for conceiving the idea of the street soccer, honestly they have done well and I want to urge all the parties involve not to stop the competition because youths in Lagos State now look forward to it every year.
He also thanked the sponsor of his team, a woman who have dare to thread where some men are afraid to thread, Oyindamola Adegoke, Supervisor for Works in Ikeja Local Government for identifying with the youths of Oluwaleyimu street in the past two years, her contribution towards the team is the tonic that has kept the team going, saying they want to reciprocate the support by going all the way this year.
