SONigeria receives “The Ball” in Nigeria

As  activities  build up for the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Special Olympics Nigeria will today receive, “The Ball” in Nigeria.

The Ball, football’s equivalent of the Olympic Torch, every four years kicks off from “Mount Olympus”, Bettersea Park in London, where the very first game of modern  football took place. It’s destination is the Opening Ceremony of the World Cup in South Afric.

“The Ball” which will be officially received at the Astro -Turf 2000, Ikoyi, arrived into the country yesterday having travelled through Morocco, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Cote De Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin and would get to some other African countries before arriving at its destination, South Africa in June 2010 for the World Cup.

As part of the activities marking the arrival of “The Ball” in Nigeria, Special Olympics Nigeria has put together a novelty  5-Aside soccer match to be played by teams featuring athletes with and without intellectual disability in the very best spirit of the game at the Astro-Turf 2000, Ikoyi.
