Quarry investors charge Elechi on multiple levies

 By Dennis Agbo

ABAKALIKI—INVESTORS in quarry business in Ebonyi State have asked Governor Martin Elechi to halt, without further delay, the multiple taxes and levies they are being subjected to by the agencies of the state government.

The aggrieved investors made up mostly of buyers of chippings for construction works within and outside the state, said that such levies were imposed on them before lifting any trip of chippings from the Umuoghara site in Ezza North Local Government Area of the state.

The investors who spoke with newsmen, accused the state government and its agencies of going beyond the constitutionally recognised levies charged by the Nigeria Union of Mine Workers, National Association of Road Transport Owners, NARTO, the State Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Mineral Development and that of the local government to extort other levies, which they say are illegal.

The investors claimed that for each tipper load of chippings from the site, they pay taxes/levies to nine different government agencies and associations amounting to about N7,000.

According to them, the development has been adversely affecting the general economic activities in the quarry sector of the state, as many buyers are scared away due to high cost of the product.
