Police nab undergraduate over attempt to dupe mum

By Taye Obateru

Jos — An attempt by an undergraduate to dupe his mother by claiming that he was kidnapped has landed him in trouble as he is now in police custody.

The suspect who claimed to be a 200-level Psychology student of the University of Jos was paraded by the police in Jos, yesterday.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Lerama, the suspect had phoned his mother to inform her that he had been kidnapped by some people who are demanding a ransom of N80,000.00.

He implored his mum to pay the ransom through his account, urging her not to contact the police on the development.
However, the mum promptly reported the matter to the police and was advised to play along. She subsequently paid the money into the account which had been placed on security alert to monitor any transaction.

Hence, by the time the suspect went to the bank to collect the money, he was arrested and handed over to the police.
The suspect who attested that his mother had been taking good care of him since his father died said he cooked up the story to get money to meet some personal needs and pleaded with her to forgive him.

Also paraded was a middle aged man who allegedly attempted to stab to death a 12-year-old girl in Angwan Dalyop area of the state capital.

He allegedly forced the girl into his room and drew a knife to attack her but she raised an alarm which attracted neighbours, forcing him to take to his heels.

However, he was subsequently arrested by soldiers maintaining security in the area and handed over to the police. The suspect told journalists that he was drunk on the day of the incident and wanted to rape the girl and not to kill her.
