A founding member of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, Malam Adamu Ciroma, has warned against any clandestine move to sack the Prince Vincent Ogbulafor-led National Working Committee, NWC, just as he stressed that if allowed, it would spell doom for the party ahead of 2011 elections.
Ciroma, who noted that the move will set the party backward as well as polarise PDP if not nipped in the bud, added, “PDP must be run on the basis of rules and so far there is nothing contrary to the rules. If you may be dissatisfied on how somebody runs an organisation, if he has not broken any of the rules, there is no way you can remove him without you breaking the rules.”
Every good organisation must be run on the basis of rules and laws. PDP is too big to be run on the faces of what people think and express.â€
Speaking in Abuja, yesterday, the former Minister of Finance noted that since the party won the last Presidential election, it has become imperative to allow NWC conduct the next elections, adding, “the party won the last election, it is there to conduct the next election and I think it is a good thing to allow the leadership of the party to conduct the next election.
“PDP is the only organized political party and its leadership emerged through a process. It has to been run on the bases of rules and anybody maybe dissatisfied on the way the chairman of the party runs it, but his dissatisfaction must be expressed in the normal channels of how things are as stipulated in the party. The chairman was elected at the last convention of the party. In fact I can talk about it because I conducted the election. The next time to talk to him will be in the next Convention. The next convention is in fact only intended to consider vote of confidence in the chairman of the party.
“If the party voted no confidence, it means that he will not last long in the party, but if the party members expressed confidence. That means he can contest for the second term. So, dissatisfaction or no dissatisfaction, PDP must be run on the bases of rules and so far there is nothing contrary to the rules if you may be dissatisfied on how somebody runs an organization if has not broken any of the rules, there is no way you can remove him without you breaking the rulesâ€.
Mallam Ciroma who stressed the need for the emergence of other strong opposition parties in the country to allow the electorate make a choice, said, “this is the only party that is being run properly in this country. I am one of the founding fathers of PDP and I know that this party/ NWC has performed according to our expectations, but the Nigerian political scene has not acted to our expectation. As Chief MKO Abiola used to say you cannot clap with only one hand. If we want a democratic Nigerian, it means we require more than one party.
“So far we only got one party, the rest they are trying, I supposed to put a party together and I want them to put a party together; I want more than one party because if we don’t have more than one party, it’s the electorate that will suffer. So, whoever is intending to form mega party or whatever alternative to PDP, me, I welcome them, but there is no need of bringing confusion in PDP just because the other people are unable to form and run their party. If they consult me, I will tell them on how to run a party.
“You see, the next convention will deal with a number of issues, but more importantly the next convention will deal with rules for producing candidates at the primary levels in the party. So, the important issue is that we are looking at the next election and this party organization may rightly look forward in handling the next election and I can see that there is no problem at the moment while they cannot handle the next election. But if the generality of the people in the party want a change of leadership nobody can stop them.
“What they do is right. However, if we don’t care about the party and its past will probably crush other members and we don’t need to throw away the baby and the bath water The party won the last election, its there to conduct the next election and I think it’s a good thing to allow the leadership of the party to conduct the next election, but, I am a democrat, if the majority in the party feel that they want to change the leadership off course they can. But you still have to know that it is a large number of people from all parts of Nigeria that are going to be involvedâ€.
