Minister tasks Police on 2011 elections

ABUJA—Minister of   Police Affairs, Alhaji Adamu Waziri yesterday challenged all stakeholders to show commitment towards a credible outcome at the polls in order to have a peaceful, and violence-free political parties’ primaries in 2010, as well as the general elections in the country.

Alhaji Waziri in a meeting with the Commissioners of Police of the 36 states and Abuja at Force headquarters, noted that consequently, the Nigeria Police should be more than ever before, ready and committed towards having a hitch free, fair and credible election.

“For the nation to achieve this task, the responsibility and assurance rests squarely on the Nigeria Police” the minister said adding, “Government on its part would continue to provide the necessary enabling environment for you (Police) to succeed.”

On what will be his focus in the ministry, he said, “My focus will be placed on implementation of realistic policies and measures to create conducive environment for Nigeria Police to perform its duties and responsibilities creditably as well as effectively.

“Furthermore, I wish to underscore the importance of welfare in the overall scheme of things. It is my belief that the Nigeria Police have very capable officers and men poised to provide internal security for Nigeria through prevention and detection of crime, protection of life and property, and law enforcement. However, these desired goals will remain unattainable without an appropriate welfare programme and a demonstrable commitment to implement same”.
