COME this Easter celebration fun seekers and lovers of water leisure would have the opportunity to savour the best of Lagos waters, as the Lagos Water Boat Regatta holds on Saturday April 3, as part of activities organised by the Lagos State government to treat both residents and visitors to an exciting and fulfilling Easter fiesta as never before.
This would be the first time in the history of Lagos that the state would be treating people to the splendor of it aquatic treasures with a boat regatta billed to set sail from 5, Cowrie Creek on Saturday by 12noon as colourfully bedecked yachts, canoes, boats and kayaks would take over the Lagos waters.
To ensure massive participation, the state government is also providing free transportation with buses at such designated centres as Epe, Badagary, Agege and Ojulegba to convey people to the different centres.
According to the organisers of the event, it promises to be a thrilling moment with over 30 well_decorated boats and 360 participants in various traditional costumes and regalia, cultural troupes, which include Egungun, Gelede, Sangbeto, Igunnuko and Agere on parade. About five different exciting events have been packaged for the water fun fare with the parade of well decorated flat bed ferry (40ft long) with live band, dancing and cultural troupe from the National dancing troupe.
The regatta routes include _ . Eleke Crescent/ Awolowo road, Oyinkan Abayomi Street and Ozumba Nbadiwe, Maroko Foreshore/Olateju Crescent in Lekki scheme,/foreshore.
The official ceremony is bill to hold by 4:00pm with the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, as the special guest of honour. Over 100 boats and yachts of different sizes drawn from some of the boat clubs, private jetties and boat operators as well as riverine communities in the state are expected to take part in the boat procession (parade) along designated waterways.
Other highlights include a canoe involving 12 canoes manned by six paddling men and women. The race will commence at Calverton Helipad Waterfront and terminates at the Boat club/Eleke Crescent Waterfront.
The first three winners would be awarded differentÂ prizes. Kayak and sailing display and competition in different categories of male and female, children and adults. There would also be Jet Ski and Water Ski by experts drawn from Lagos Motor Boat Club, Tarzan Marine Services Limited and others.
Some of the designated private viewing centres across the city are Oriental Hotel, Maroko foreshore, Cactus Restaurant, Ozumba Mbadiwe Street, Victoria Island, Aqua Marine Boat club (Civic Centre) Ozumba Mbadiwe Street Victoria Island.
Lagos Motor Boat club while the public viewing centres are _ The Pavilion, Admiralty way Lekki Scheme 1, foreshore, Oyinkan Abayomi Street, (The empty space close to Mekunwen street junction Ikoyi), Peninsula Restaurant, Ozumba Mdadiwe Street Victoria Island. The VIP Stand is located at Calverton Helipad along Ozumba Mbadiwe.
Adequate security and safety measures are according to the organsiers put in place by the state government to secure the lives of people and attend to any emergency situation. The boating event, which henceforth would be an annul is aimed at promoting aqua culture, water transportation and services, water related sports and recreation and promote awareness among the citizenry on the unique natural endowment of Lagos State and its many potential for the well being of the huge population of Lagos including the international communities in the state.
