There will be no dull moment for cricket enthusiasts in Lagos as the 2010 GTA/Lagos 20 Twenty cricket tournament bowls off at the University of Lagos cricket oval this weekend.


According to fixtures made available to Vanguard Sports desk, there will be two matches on the opening day. On Saturday Stallion Cricket Club of Lagos take on  Ibadan Metropolitan Cricket Club in the opening match.

The second match billed for the same venue, same day will see Ibeju-Lekki 2 try their luck against Foundation Cricket Club if Lagos.

Earlier in the week, management of Guarantee Trust Assur, sponsors of the annual tournament presented a N1million sponsorship cheque to the Lagos State Cricket Association.
Presenting the cheque at the company’s boardroom, General Mnager, Owolabi Salami said as part of their commitment to the Nigerian youth the company was compelled to use cricket to develop and redirect their energies into meaningful pastimes.

“This is a clear demonstration of that commitment and we are ready to engage the association in many other ways to promote the development of the sport in Lagos state in particular and Nigeria as a whole.”

Receiving the cheque, chairman of the association, George Wiltshire thanked the management for remaining faithful to the association. George said the gesture went beyond the fulfilment of the organisation’s social responsibility. “It’s a social responsibility which provides a deserved satisfaction that the company is involved in the making of future stars.”

The tournament begins with Ibadan Metropolitan Cricket club taking on Stallion of Lagos in the opening match while the second match of the day features Foundation Cricket Club of Lagos taking on Ibeju Lekki 2 cricket club. Both matches will be played at the Unilag cricket pitch, Akoka.
