Fashola sets machinery to revive Lagos City League

The Lagos State government in an effort to reclaim her lost position in sports dominance especially basketball on Tuesday set up a 6-man board to reshape the running of the Lagos City League with effect from January 2011.|

Lagos State governor, Raji Fashola through his commissioner for sports, Adeniji Adele while addressing a meeting of stakeholders at the Teslim Balogun stadium stated that the time had come for some seriousness in ensuring that basketball in the state takes a new dimension.

“The Lagos State government is not interested in paying lip service to sports and that is why having gotten the MTN street soccer going on a very good note, we’re set to take basketball to the next level. Government is going to use the machinery of State to ensure that funding is not a problem because we believe that the moment we can get the Lagos City League on a good footing, basketball in the state will excel. The clubs here are competitive enough for us to have a good league from what has been the case in previous leagues.”

He noted that the State’s basketball association led by Babs Ogunade in collaboration with other stakeholders would give Lagos a befitting league that is sure to stand the test of time.

At the end of the meeting, a 6-man board aimed at steering the ship was set-up with Babs Ogunade as chairman with Col. Sam Ahmedu (rtd), Effiong Nyong Ganiyu Otenigbagbe, Oluwaseun Shotanwa and Utman Okunnu as members.
The board is to put together a blue print on how the league will be run when operational. The Commissioner assured the stakeholders that the league will come into effect without delay when the blue print reaches his desk.

“The period of three months is to get across to as many corporate organizations that would partner us in this project. For us, it’s not a money making venture but for us to see that the game of basketball takes its rightful place.”

Also at the meeting, four sub committees were set-up. The committees are technical headed by Col. Sam Ahmedu, Disciplinary headed by Ganiyu Otenigbagbe, Media, headed by Effiong Nyong; marketing committee headed by Oluwaseun Shotanwa and medical committee headed by Dr. Bukola Bojuwoye.
