By Gabriel Enogholase

BENIN—AUTHORITIES of the College of Education, Ekiadolor, near Benin, have closed down the institution for two weeks, following violent protests by the students over payment of N1000 late registration fee.

Two students of the college were allegedly injured during the protest. They are the President of the Student Union Government, Mr. Jeffery Eghaghe, and Public Relation officer, Mr. Odia Joseph.

Vanguard learnt that trouble started last Friday when the students led a peaceful protest over the decision of the authorities of the institution to charge them late enrolment fee as majority of them were not willing to register for 1st semester.

Yesterday’s protest began when the institution’s management turned down pleas by the students to extend the examination date by one week to enable them carry out some revision

But the Provost of the College, Prof. Amen Uhunmwangho, told newsmen in Benin that the management of the institution acceded to the request by the students that they be allowed to pay the late enrolment fees at the commencement of the 2nd semester, only for them to come and demand for the cancellation of the enrolment fees.
