Amodu remains our chief coach, Amokachi says of local Eagles

Like a ghost that has refused to go, the name of coach Amodu Shaibu re-echoed in Abeokuta when his erstwhile assistant, Daniel Amokachi declared that the Edo state-born sweat merchant remains the number one man of the technical crew of the home-based Eagles.

Answering questions after the Eagles’ 5-0 bashing of Sily Stars of Guinea, Amokachi said, “I wish to correct one impression people seem to have about this team. I am not the chief coach of the home-based Eagles. I am only assisting. Shaibu Amodu is the man in charge of the team. I was called in to handle the team pending when he returns.”

Amokachi would not entertain questions on the Eagles’ ouster by Niger from the African Nations Championship. “I think it will only be fair to narrow your questions to this particular match (against Guinea). Even a blind man would know that this match is different from the Niger match. Even against Niger it was just hardluck. We created 23 chances including a penalty, but could not convert any. That is football.

“Today we played well as we were able to score five goals. It is not easy to score that number of goals in a single match. The boys should be commended,” Amokachi enthused.
