PDP raises alarm over plans to truncate 2011 elections

*Says no friction between Jonathan and Party

ABUJA— THE National Leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday raised alarm that there were plans by some Nigerians to truncate the 2011 general elections, just as it described the move as defeatist nature of the opposition.

In a statement by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Professor Rufai Ahmed Alkali, the party which noted that it has concluded plans to name these persons, said, “We have cause to alert Nigerians of plans by some disgruntled politicians to throw spanners in our wheel of progress.

“We are aware of plans by these persons to truncate the 2011 elections long in advance. This was yet another example of the defeatist nature of our opposition elements who are always unprepared for elections but only come out to criticize the outcome when they lose.

“These are elements in the society who are desperately working hard to manipulate every occasion to vent their anger and frustration on the government and the ruling Party over their failure in past elections. In the last four months, all methods, shameful and ignoble had been adopted to create division at all levels of government with a view to achieving pre-determined objectives”.

Apparently reacting to the composition of the new ministerial lists, the party noted that there was no disconnect between it and Acting President, Goodluck Jonathan, adding that the presidency has always taken the party into confidence on every policy matter.

“We wish to state with every emphasis that insinuations of frictional relationship between the party and the presidency exists only in the warped imaginations of their sponsors. The PDP has always maintained that the presidency is one and we had at every given opportunity, pledged our loyalty and cooperation to the Acting President who has been discharging his duties with distinction. At no time has there been a gap between the party and the presidency.

“The Presidency has always taken the Party into confidence on every policy matter. We know for a fact that the Acting President is focused and is not distracted by the ongoing campaign of calumny from hunters of fortune who wish to reap where they have not sown.
