Ortom condemns alleged move to unseat Ogbulafor

By Peter Duru

MAKURDI — National Auditor of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Samuel Ortom, has condemned what he described as orchestrated campaigns from some members of the party in the South-Eastern part of the country to remove Chief Vincent Ogbulafor as National Chairman of the party.

He described the move as mischievous and intended to destabilise the party. He, therefore, advised those behind the move to desist in the interest of the party.

Ortom made the remark while speaking with newsmen in Makurdi, noting that the campaign is a mere gimmick that would serve no useful purpose.

He expressed confidence in the leadership of Ogbulafor whom he described as a true democrat, maintaining that under him the party has attained enviable heights.

He said: “Ogbulafor has done nothing wrong. The party has indeed recorded tremendous achievements under his leadership and the National Executive Committee, NEC, had passed a vote of confidence in him.”

The PDP chieftain declared that the NEC would not in any way be intimidated by these calls, adding that the move will be resisted by all party faithful.

Similarly, Ortom stressed that the current executives of the party were elected for a tenure of four years which he noted they were yet to serve out.

He argued that since the party leadership was brought into office by the ballot, it was rational for those canvassing the idea of change of the leadership to allow the members of the exco complete their tenure before they embark on such calls which would be put before party faithful who had elected the leadership.

He said: “Ogbulafor and other members of NEC have been elected for a period of four years and if at the end of our tenure, we ask Nigerians and they feel that we should go back, fine. The constitution says that we are eligible for re-election.

“The group making these calls should not be faceless. They should come out. We are not going to be intimidated by the people who think they can remove the PDP Chairman for no just cause.

“That is what they did when the Senate President was zoned to them and you discovered that every now and then they removed the Senate President. It is not healthy for our party.”
