Kalu makes case for sports heroes

Pillar of Sports,Dr.Orji Uzor Kalu has advised the Sports ministry to begin the process of immortalising Nigeria’s heroes even as stakeholders gather in Abuja next week for a maiden national Sports Conference.

Kalu who spoke yesterday in Abuja emphasised the link between present and past heroes as a vital tool of development.

He said, “there should be a better way of celebrating our heroes instead of reading their tales of woe on newspaper pages. Government should go back to the idea of a Hall Of Fame to enable compatriots appreciate them the more.”

In addition, The former Abia state governor bewailed the plight of some stars who made the country proud only to fall back on hardship in retirement.

‘Some years back,Fabian Duru the first captain of the Green Eagles and last skipper of the Red Devils died unsung.His people in Imo kept asking coach Paul Hamilton when the football federation would come.Today , Willy Bazuaye an Olympic gold medallist whose son Baldwin won FIFA U_17 gold is down and crying in Benin.

Luis Igwillo, a Mandela Cup winner is a widower in crutches and the last i heard of ex_goalie Rigogo Inua was a destitute in outer Lagos.’ Kalu remarked.
