JTF probes alleged killing of two Ilaje youths

INVESTIGATIONS into the circumstances that led to the alleged killings of two Ilaje youths during last Monday protest at Costain community, Escravos, has commenced by the Joint Task Force, JTF.

The youths were allegedly killed during a protest in Costain, Escravos, in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State against the continued dredging of their community by Chevron Nigeria Limited without compensation.

Security sources disclosed that some wounded Ilaje youths were brought from the coastal community to the Effurun Barracks of the JTF yesterday to incident the matter since there was no police station or any other security formation where such matter could be reported in their area.

The two persons were said to have been feared killed on Monday following an alleged attack on protesting Ilaje and some Itsekiri youths over the dredging of their community by Chevron Nigeria Limited without adequate compensation.

Security sources told Vanguard that trouble started when the Ilaje youths stormed the dredging site to peacefully protest the impact of the project on their community but were allegedly beaten up by soldiers.

“The Ilaje youths have been complaining about the effect of the dredging exercise by Ascot Construction Company Limited and Westminster Dredging Limited on behalf of Chevron Nigeria Limited on their environment.

“So when the Ilajes embarked on a peaceful protest to the project site, the soldiers stationed around the area”.

Lawyer to the community, Mr. Taiwo Orisabinone confirmed that the victims of the attack were taken to the JTF to formally protest the attack and the continued intimidation of the people by the contracting firms to Chevron working on the project.
