ABUJA—The Senate has urged Nigerians to downplay the health condition or whereabouts of President Umaru Yar‘Adua and give their full cooperation to Acting President Goodluck Jonathan.

At a briefing following yesterday’s Senate session, Senate spokesman Senator Ayogu Eze also affirmed the superiority of the President of the Senate in the order of protocol in the National Assembly. His assertion came against the reported refusal of the House of Representatives to cooperate with the Senate at last weekend’s joint review of the 1999 Constitution.

Senator Eze also traced the delay in the passage of the 2010 budget by the Senate to additions to the earlier budgetary proposals by the executive arm of government. The additional N300 billion being put into the budget he said were mostly in the areas of power and Police.

“I want to use this opportunity to plead with Nigerians that we should focus on supporting the Acting President and helping him to strengthen his programme so that he can deliver the promises of our government while he is in that saddle.”
