UK Athletics head coach ,Charles van Commenee is disappointed by Phillips Idowu’s decision to withdraw from the World Indoor Championships starting today in Doha Qatar.
World triple jump champion, Idowu, announced his intention to pull out of the event, because the birth of his second child disrupted his training schedule.
The colourful athlete, who would have been defending his World Indoor crown in Qatar, would have been one of Great Britain’s best hopes for a medal and Van Commenee said: “I am disappointed that Phillips is not competing as he was a clear medal prospect for us. However I need to respect his decision and I look forward to him resuming winning ways in Barcelona in the summer.â€
The 31-year-old, who won World Championship gold outdoors in Berlin last summer, has not been in top form this season.
His longest jump of 17.25 metres, which he set in finishing fourth at the Aviva Grand Prix in Birmingham last month, is well down on his indoor personal best of 17.75m, although it is also just 14cm down on Italian Fabrizio Donato’s world-leading jump of 17.39.
