Edo CP denies quizzing Anenih over bomb scare

By Gabriel Enogholase

BENIN—EDO State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Emmanuel Udeoji, yesterday in Benin refuted media reports alleging that he invited Chief Tony Anenih to his office and quizzed him for two hours over the recent bomb scare in the state.

Udeoji told journalists at a press conference that Chief Anenih came to his office on his own volition, spent some two or three minutes with him and left immediately.

According to him, “I did not invite Chief Tony Anenih; there was nothing in our investigation that points to Chief Anenih as being the cause of the bomb scare in Edo State.

“In any event, the bombs in the state were discovered and detonated, unlike the one in Warri, it did not explode.

“So, how can somebody just wake up and publish what is not true?   It is not only defamatory but outrightly false. Chief Anenih came here just to say hello to me, that he learnt I was in the state and that he came to say hello.

“So, I don’t see what is strange in having senior citizens come to my office. All of you come to my office and it is not an issue. Why is Anenih’s own a different thing? Why I called you here is to refute in its entirety that I never invited Chief Anenih or quizzed him for two hours.”

Udeoji said although he did not know the source of the information, he insisted that he was going to carry out a thorough investigation to find out the source.

It would be recalled that Edo State Government, through the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Peter Okhiria, Sunday commended the state police commissioner for inviting Chief Tony Anenih for questioning, in the view of recent security breaches in the state.\
