The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Management Services, Babcock University, Professor David Babalola has called on Nigerian sports leaders to also pay attention to the development of other sports such as athletics, swimming, boxing, basket ball among others the same way they are paying attention to the development of the game of football.
Professor Babalola made this call during the 16th annual inter-house sports festival of Babcock University Staff School tagged â€œExercise to stay healthyâ€ held in the school premises at Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State recently. He observed that during international sports competitions, other countries particularly the developed ones such as United States of America, Britain, France, China and Germany top the medals table, while Nigeria most times will be at the bottom of the same table. He said that this is not good for Nigeria as a nation. He added that God blessed Nigeria with many talented sportsmen and women who should be encouraged.
On the essence of BabcockÂ University Staff School inter-house sports, Professor Babalola said pupilÂ and students intellectually, physically, spiritually and morally, the pupils are encouraged to take active part in sports. He also advised the pupils to demonstrate spirit of sportsmanship during the competition in his opening address. He commended the management and staff of the school for organizing a very successful inter-house sports.
Speaking during the line with the standard set by the owners of the school, that is Seventh-day Adventists which encourage holistic education that has to do with the education of the brain, mind and hands which make the child a complete being. He added that this 16th edition is better than that of last year in terms organization, attendance and performance. He said that new talents had been discovered this year. According to Mr Alao, the school is divided into four houses namely; Red house, Blue house, Yellow house and Green house and that each of the houses took part in the competition.
According to him the events of day were march past, 50metresÂ boys and girls, 75m boys and girls, Lime and Spoon race (girls), pick the balls (boys and girls), sack race boys, 100m (junior boys and girls), 100m (intermediate, boys and girls), 4x100m school relay, invited schools relay among others. He said that in the overall result, Red house came first, Yellow house took the second position, Blue house came third and the fourth position went to the Green house.
He said that in the invited schools also took part in the relay race.Â Trophies and prizes were presented to deserving houses and pupils including those of invited schools.
Furthermore, Mr. Alao said that Babcock University Staff School has a lot of good athletes among the pupils who have been doing the school proud during external competitions.
He sited instance with a sports competition organized at May Flower College Ikenne where his pupils won gold and silver medals. He advised pupils and students in other schools to start getting involved in sports early in life because it can also take them to greater heights in future. He thanked the Management of Babcock University, Babcock University High School and Parents Teachers Association (PTA) for the support they have been giving to his school both morally and financially.
He appealed to Parents Teachers Association (PTA) to support sports in the school by donating trophies and sponsoring houses. In his words, he noted â€œBabcock University Staff School is likely to move to a new site very soon, Parents Teachers Association (PTA) can develop a sports certre thereâ€. Commenting also on the inter-house sports, the Principal of Babcock University High School, Elder Timothy Adetayo commended the Management and Staff of BUSS for developing sports talents in the school to such an enviable level. He observed that most great sportsmen and women we have in the world today started their sports career at primary school level. He charged the pupils to take sports, very serious because through it, they can make their school, parents and the nation proud and also earn good income in future.
Also speaking on the event, Pastor (Dr) Israel Olaore, one of the parents present at the occasion and whose child, Master Enoch Olaore came first in one of the track events, thanked God for the great things He is doing in the life of the pupils and also in the school. He commended the Management and Staff of the school for job well done. He prayed God to continue to guide and protect the children and staff of the school.
Additionally, Miss Charity Simon from Red House who came first in 200 metres senior girls, 100 metres senior girls and race 4×100 m school relay said she was very happy because of her performance in the inter-house sports.
