Suswam’s wife raises alarm over rise in HIV/AIDS infection

MAKURDI—First lady of Benue State, Mrs. Yemisi Suswam has raised the alarm over the rising cases of HIV/AIDS infection in the state, describing the development as worrisome.

Mrs. Suswam regretted that the people have failed to come to terms with the fact that the disease was real hence many have falling cheap prey to the virus.

She noted that the alarming rate at which the virus was being spread in the state has become a source of worry for all discerning minds in the state.

The Governor’s wife who spoke while playing host to a delegation from the Christian Health Association, lamented the attitude of the people of the state to the existence of the virus.

She stressed that the state has continued to lose its productive labour force to the dreaded virus, advising that the people learn to develop utmost self restraint in order to avoid being victims of HIV/AIDS.

Represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on HIV/AIDS and other Communicable Diseases, Mrs. Maria Idu, the Benue State first lady disclosed that she has picked up the challenge posed by the spread of the virus in the state.

According to her, SEVAV Foundation, her pet project has delved into aggressive campaigns against the spread of the virus even as it provides counseling and treatment for infected persons.

Mrs. Suswam informed that the activities of the Foundation which cuts across the three senatorial zones of the state has gone a long way in providing succor for the infected persons in the state.

She said, “we are losing productive hands to the virus and we cannot continue to live in ignorance, because AIDS is real and the earlier we realize this fact the better for us all and our dear state and indeed the entire nation,” she said.
