PDP doubts INEC’s sincerity on Anambra polls

By  Tony Edike

ENUGU—THE Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has expressed serious doubts over the sincerity of the Professor Maurice Iwu-led Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct a transparent election in Anambra State on Saturday.

The party said yesterday that there had been rumours and speculations that the election was being planned for a particular governorship candidate, stressing that the development coming few days to the election should not be completely ignored.

South East Zonal Chairman of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, who expressed the party’s concern, said the PDP would resist any attempt by the electoral body to favour a particular candidate in the election, advising that a level playing ground should be provided for all parties in the election to enable the people elect a Governor of their choice.

“The rumour everywhere in Anambra is that the election is being planned for a particular candidate, even though we still believe in the impartiality of INEC, we are calling on security agencies to be extra vigilant,” he said.

Urging international and national observers to observe and monitor the election thoroughly, the PDP zonal chairman said the party would continue to insist that “nothing short of free and fair election will be adequate for Nigerian at this present stage.”

Metuh advised all the parties in the election to play according to the rules and shun electoral malpractices and violence to enable the electorate decide and elect the best candidate.
