Ohakim charges Heartland to sit up

Imo State Governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim has charged the players, technical crew as well as the management team of Heartland Football Club of Owerri to end their current poor runs in the league and put in greater effort, in order to return the team on the part of victory and honour.


The Chief of Staff, Government House, Owerri, Sir Emma Ohakim who represented the governor during a meeting held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Owerri on Friday, also assured on government’s determination to revamp and transform the club into modern model club side.

In a statement signed by the club’s Media Officer, Cajetan Nkwopara, the Chief of Staff while expressing government’s appreciation of the feat the team recorded when it finished second place in the CAF Champions League in 2009, however, regretted that that feat together with the hope it kindled, appeared to be fading away with the recent streak of losses in the premier league, few weeks to another CAF Champions league outing.

The government he said, was ready to ensure that fund would not be a stumbling block to the team’s aspiration in both the league and CAF Champions League campaign this season.

Sir Ohakim pledged that the government would act with dispatch on the necessary welfare issues raised by the players and officials and that the team would soon be hosted to a grand reception in appreciation of its CAF Champions League performance in 2009, by the state government.

Recalling the huge financial and moral support the government gave to Heartland last season which enabled the club to reach the CAF Champions League final, the Chief of Staff said the government was prepared to do even more this time around but only appealed to the team to encourage it (the government) by posting good results beginning with the coming league encounter against Niger Tornadoes on Sunday.

Sir Ohakim said in order to create for the club an easy and quick access to the government, Heartland would be placed under the direct supervision  of the newly appointed deputy chief of staff at the government house who would be inaugurated next week.

In their various reactions, the club Chairman, Chief Ignatius Okeahialm, the Technical Adviser, Kelechi Emeteole and the TeamCaptain, Chinedu Effugh all promised to add vigour to their job to ensure that the dream of the club is achieved.

Meanwhile, Heartland may soon move into camp ahead of their CAF Champions League match coming up on the weekend of March 19-21, 2010. The Nigerian flag bearers will be meeting the winners of the first round knockout between Tito FC of Cameroun and Vital O of Gabon.
