NLC asks ECOWAS, AU to impose economic sanctions on new military junta

NIGERIA Labour  Congress (NLC), yesterday condemned the military takeover of government in the neighbouring Niger Republic and called on the leaders of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and African Union (AU), to immediately imposed stiff economic sanctions on the military government being formed.

NLC in a statement also condemned sacked  President Mamadou Tandja for creating a fertile ground for the military to seize power by his sit-tight attitude, especially for holding on to  power for more than a decade and created tension in the country when he changed the constitution last August to allow him to stay in power beyond his legal term limit.

In the statement by its General Secretary, Comrade John Odah, NLC called on international bodies especially ECOWAS and AU  to go beyond condemnation and put in place a programme of action to force the junta out of power in Niger and restore democracy and state institutions in the country.
